Hayle 1 Wendron 3
Hayle were again hit by injuries and illness and despite a battling performance slipped to a 3 - 1 home defeat to Wendron.
The visitors have probably the best midfielder in the division and Hayle knew that they had to match them in this area. Unfortunately Hayle's own key midfielder was unable to play at the last minute and a hastily reshuffled team took the field. Glen Bloxham dropped back from attack to combat the threat from Wendron's midfied and Joe Cross moved into attack. His place wide was taken by Sol Wallace who had been playing FIFA 2012 only 30 minutes beore kick off!
Plan B seem to be working fine as Hayle withstood Wendron's excellent play through good organisation and hard work. The game was fairly even but Hayle were causing problems with the speed of Joe Cross. Wendron's defence was not looking comfortable and it was no surprise when Glen robbed Wendron's star player to run 30 yards before crashing in a shot off the underside of the bar. Hayle were in charge as half time approached. Connor Bryan and Jamie Rogers were looking their normal composed selves as Wendron were forced into speculative long range shots. However, the turning point came just before half time when Glen was injured and was forced to leave the game. Hayle now had to revert to plan C.
A quick half time reshuffle aimed to continue the double coverage on Wendon's midfield. Sol Wallace and Jojo Stewart had run themselves into the ground and Hayle had few options to help them. Felix McCrossen came into defence and Jamie moved forward. Wendron began to exert pressure without creating a clear opportunity. However, just as Glen was being carried off to A and E a poor corner eluded Joe Pascoe in goal leaving a tap in from less than a yard. Wendron now attacked with renewed belief and a tremendous drive into the top corner was spectacularly saved by Joe - probably the save of the season. Hayle recovered their poise but posed limited threat going forward as Joe Cross was a little isolated. A draw looked possible until another individual error allowed Wendron to break through the defensive line and although Joe made another great save the rebound was converted. As time was running out Hayle pushed forward looking for the equaliser and were caught on the break for a last minute goal that sealed the victory for Wendron
Overall the team performed brilliantly in trying circumstances that resulted in two players visiting hospital. The teams meet again soon in a semi final and Hayle are looking forward to reversing this result.
Hayle 0 Trevenson 1
League leaders Trevenson arrived at second placed Hayle knowing that victory would secure the championship and after a fantastic game they emerged with a one nil victory.
These teams had only conceded 11 goals in their combined 14 matches and it was clear from kick off that there were two excellent defences on display. A cagey opening 10 minutes was evenly balanced. Both teams were playing excellent football and skilfully manoeuvring the ball around the big pitch. Louis Hurley and Sol Wallace were linking well going forward but also screening the defence brilliantly. Connor Bryan and Jamie Rogers were commanding at the back and showed fantastic discipline to prevent Trevenson's lively forwards gaining any chances in the area.
Trevenson began to increase possession and were unlucky not to score when a tremendous 25 yard drive flicked the top of the cross bar. A few minutes later the deadlock was broken when a clearance was luckily charged down but there was no fortune involved in the excellent finish into the top corner which gave Joe Pascoe no chance. Hayle fought their way back into the game and were denied an equaliser when keeper dived bravely at the feet of Glen Bloxam. Hayle were finishing the half on top and the keeper was forced to handle a back pass but Hayle were unable to force home the free kick from within the area. Just on half time Connor Bryan hit a 40 yard shot from inside his own half that skimmed just above the surface and forced the keeper into an excellent save.
Hayle began the second confidently and Sol Wallace nearly connected with an excellent cross from Joe Cross. Trevenson continued to play good football and the entertaining midfield battle resumed. The Hayle defence was reshuffled and Jordan Trevorrow slotted in and made several strong tackles.
As the game entered the final ten minutes Hayle began to push men forward and hemmed Trevenson in their own half. Joe Cross was causing havoc on the left and Akhil Pulley added his skills on the right of midfield. An equaliser looked certain when the ball fell to Glen a yard from goal but the keeper made a great safe. Another scramble saw the ball just go wide of the Trevenson post. Then a mishit clearance seemed destined for the bottom corner of the Trevenson goal only for the keeper to claw the ball out for a corner. Just as the crowd were expecting a final push Trevenson demonstrated why they are unbeaten. They kept the ball in the Hayle half for the final few minutes forcing a series of corners. Although the Hayle goal was never threatened, the clock was run down and Trevenson claimed the victory and the league title. Congratulations to them on an excellent season.
Congratulations also to all the Hayle team that matched the champions in every respect and certainly deserved something from the game. The quality of the game as summed up by a Trevenson substitute who stated that he would have "paid to watch this match."
Holmans 0 Hayle 2
Hayle have been badly hit by illness over the last few games and have been forced to play weakened teams and even postpone last week's game. This week they were forced to play without keeper Joe Pascoe who was absent with tonsillitis.
The trip to Holmans would have tested a full strength team as they were unbeaten on their incredibly small pitch. So, Hayle were delighted to come away with all three points from a battling 2 - 0 victory.
The hero of the day was Jamie Rogers who volunteered to go in goal despite never even playing there in training.
The game opened fairly evenly and neither team could gain the upper hand. Joe Cross and Glen Bloxam were linking well on the left with a series of neat passes. However, Holmans defended well and their keeper used his height to claim all the resulting corners. Midway through the half Hayle received a lucky boost as a back pass was completely missed by the keeper and it rolled into the net. Holmans began to push forward but their attacks never got beyond the edge of the area as Hayle defended with tremendous discipline. Felix Sadler-McCrossen making his first start of the season was superb alongside the calming and tough tackling sweeper Connor Bryan. The midfield of Louis Hurley and Jojo Stewart worked tirelessly and Holmans were reduced to long range efforts that Jamie was able to field comfortably. Jojo and Glen both had half chances that were not converted and Holmans hit a long range effort just over the bar as first half ended.
The second half started with Jordan Trevorrow coming on at centre half in place of the excellent Felix and Solomon Wallace replaced Jojo who had worked so hard. Holmans began to dominate possession as Hayle struggled in the face of the strong wind and the Holmans Keeper's huge kicks. However, the defensive discipline was still strong and Holmans were forced into speculative long shots that never troubled Jamie in goal. Sol was tremendous on the right and headed away several long throws despite being one of the smaller players. Louis received an elbow in the face and was forced to leave the game. A quick reshuffle saw Glen move back to midfield, Joe Cross moved up front and Akhil Pulley came on in midfield. Even this set back failed to upset Hayle and they began to look increasingly comfortable as the game progressed. Minutes from the end a great through ball from Glen saw Sol race through only to be foiled by a fantastic block by the Holmans keeper. In truth this was the only clear chance either team created in the entire match.
Moments from the end Glen swung in a corner that deceived the keeper and sneaked in at the near post. The keeper's reaction of punching the floor in anger somewhat threw into doubt his later claim that the ball had gone through the side netting. However, the goal stood but made no difference to the result as Hayle comfortably saw out the last few minutes to pick up three points.
Holmans were incredibly frustrated that their possession and neat football had come to nothing but they never created a clear opportunity throughout the game. Hayle proved that a tight defence always leaves you in a position to take advantage of the lucky breaks.
